Rhine-Ruhr: Germany's densest construction landscape

No other area in Germany concentrates so many industrial and infrastructure assignments in such a small space as the Ruhr area with its more than five million inhabitants. The largest single project is running in Duisburg: thyssenkrupp Steel is building one of Europe's largest direct reduction plants there for low-CO2 steel — the main construction work has been under way since the end of 2024, and the assembly of the DR tower began in early 2026. A major site that ties up steel construction, pipework and electrical fitters for years, alongside the Port of Duisburg as Europe's largest inland port with its Logport areas.

Further east the picture continues: in Dortmund, thyssenkrupp produces hot-dip galvanised steel for the automotive industry at the Westfalenhütte, and on the former ironworks land next door one of the region's largest logistics sites close to a city centre has grown up — with Amazon, DHL, DB Schenker and REWE. At Europe's largest canal port, the Speicherstraße quarter is being converted step by step into a new district, and in the south a technology park has established itself on the former blast furnace site at Phoenix-West. In Bochum, the Mark 51°7 technology campus is growing on the former Opel site with Volkswagen Infotainment, the Bosch subsidiary ETAS and further arrivals; in parallel, the six-lane widening of the A43 is under way. And for bridge and road builders, the A45 south of the region remains a permanent field of work: following the opening of the first new section of the Rahmede viaduct, further viaducts along the Sauerland route will be replaced in the coming years.

The Cologne/Bonn Rhine corridor: chemicals, cars and permanent construction

South of the Ruhr, one industrial site follows the next along the Rhine. In Cologne, the Ford works are converting their main plant in Niehl to electric production, in the south Shell operates Germany's largest refinery in Godorf/Wesseling, and the Chempark sites at Leverkusen and Dormagen are standing clients for plant construction, pipework and scaffolding. Add to that Koelnmesse in Deutz, whose major trade fairs regularly draw in whole exhibition-build crews.

In Bonn, corporate headquarters and infrastructure shape construction activity: Deutsche Telekom and DHL Group have their head offices here, a roughly 65-metre tower for the United Nations is going up at the UN Campus, and with the six-lane widening of the A565 and the rebuilding of the "Tausendfüßler" viaduct, a motorway project planned to run around nine years began in 2026. Anyone working along the Rhine corridor will find short journeys between Cologne and Bonn — the A555 links the two cities directly, and the cheaper rooms are mostly found on the right bank.

Munich: plant conversion and a century tunnel

Munich combines two permanent major sites: the BMW main plant near Milbertshofen is being converted for the Neue Klasse and ties up installation trades for years, and the tunnelling for the second S-Bahn trunk line runs right through the city centre — one of Germany's largest inner-city transport projects. Add the ongoing expansion at the airport in the Erdinger Moos, the Siemens and MAN sites, and the exhibition-build work in Riem, where set-up and take-down teams change on a weekly cycle. Since the city is among the most expensive places to live in the country, it is worth installation teams looking at the areas along the A9 and A94 — Garching, Unterföhring or Aschheim, for instance. Teams live noticeably more cheaply there and are still at the plant gate or the exhibition grounds in a short time.

Berlin/Brandenburg: Tesla, Siemensstadt and the ring road

Around Berlin, two names have been drawing installation staff for years: the Tesla Gigafactory in Grünheide east of the city, which is being expanded further, and Siemensstadt Square in Spandau — one of Germany's largest urban development projects. Add the ongoing expansion around BER airport in the south-east, the BMW motorcycle plant in Spandau, the Adlershof technology park and numerous building and infrastructure projects across the city. Handy for choosing accommodation: the Berlin ring road (A10) distributes the assignments — for Grünheide, teams are far better placed in the south-east (Erkner, Köpenick), for Spandau in the west, and for BER in the south around Schönefeld, rather than centrally.

Hamburg: the port, Airbus and the U5

As a port and industrial location, Hamburg is a permanent magnet for fitters: Airbus assembles commercial aircraft in Finkenwerder, the port with its terminals, shipyards and refineries ties up industrial, welding and plant fitters, and the new U5 underground line is one of the country's major inner-city tunnel projects. On top of that, HafenCity continues to grow in building construction, and the industrial sites of Aurubis and ArcelorMittal generate ongoing maintenance and turnaround work. For port and Airbus assignments, teams live most practically south of the Elbe — Wilhelmsburg and Harburg are close to most places of work, and the rest of the port is quickly reached via the Elbe tunnel and the Köhlbrand bridge.

Frankfurt/Rhine-Main: airport, high-rises, chemicals

In Frankfurt, the airport has just closed a chapter: with the new Terminal 3, a major project has gone into operation — but expansion, logistics and development work continues around the airport and in the Gateway Gardens area. Add high-rise construction in the banking district, the Industriepark Höchst as a chemical and pharmaceutical site with ongoing plant and turnaround work, and Messe Frankfurt, whose calendar of events keeps exhibition-build teams busy in cycles. The Rhine-Main area is also Germany's most important motorway hub — the Frankfurter Kreuz lies right by the airport, and anyone living here can reach assignments between Mainz, Darmstadt and Hanau without changing quarters. Stuttgart: the car industry and S21

And the Stuttgart 21 mega-project is far from finished: the new main station is not due to enter service until December 2031 — the underground station, tunnels and the adjoining Rosenstein quarter mean years of demand for construction and installation staff. Leipzig/Halle: car plants and a logistics boom

The biggest logistics driver is Leipzig/Halle airport with the world's largest DHL Express hub and the adjoining Airport Industrial Park; add the chemical sites in the surrounding area around Leuna and Schkopau, which regularly draw in turnaround and shutdown teams. For assignments in the north of Leipzig, teams live best in Schkeuditz or the northern districts — right by the A9 and A14, minutes from the plant gate or the hub. With shift and night work at the DHL hub in particular, a short journey pays off twice over.
